Former Tidings editor takes over the Applegater
Former Ashland Tidings editor Bert Etling is the new editor at the Applegater, a nonprofit quarterly publication that serves the Applegate watershed’s rural communities.
Etling took over as editor of the Tidings in July of 2014 and was laid off in February 2019. Prior to that, he edited a weekly paper in Cambria, California, The Cambrian, and a biweekly in Solvang, California, the Santa Ynez Valley News.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Applegater team,” Etling said in a press release. “I’ve spent my career in community journalism and have seen how important local papers are to making community dialogue better, providing the information oxygen people need to make informed decisions. I look forward to getting to know the community better and advancing the Applegater’s mission to enrich the lives of valley residents and readers.”
The Applegater is delivered to 13,000 addresses and distribution points in and near the 700-square-mile watershed of the Applegate River, according to the press release. Entering its 26th year, the 24-page tabloid is published by the nonprofit Applegate Valley Community Newspaper, Inc.
Etling replaces Barbara Holiday, who after 15 years at the helm is leaving the publication to pursue other interests, according to the release.
