Ashland girls win second straight to open season

MERLIN — Ashland was able to beat North Valley’s press for transition baskets early and turned steals into quick baskets to break away for a 62-31 victory in nonconference girls basketball Tuesday.

“We were able to get out and get some easy baskets that really got us going,” said Ashland head coach Antione Perry. “They started pressing us a little bit and we were able to just run on them.”

Jayd Sollinger had 19 points, 10 rebounds and four steals to pace the Grizzlies (2-0), who opened a 20-6 advantage through one period.

Nina Munson added 10 points, six steals and five assists and Sophia Cooper had six points and nine rebounds to help power a balanced Ashland attack.

The Grizzlies led 33-15 at halftime and didn’t allow North Valley to reach double figures in scoring in any quarter.

“It was just a good team effort,” said Perry. “I’m happy with our defensive effort. That’s one thing we’re trying to really make sure to improve and all the girls have bought in and are working hard at it and it’s starting to show.”

Abby Kirkland had nine points to lead Class 4A North Valley (1-2).

NORTH VALLEY 50, ASHLAND 49: At Merlin, Ashland’s Anthony Smith scored 12 points and fellow senior Nate Whitlock added 11 but the Grizzlies were unable to get off a potential tying 3-pointer in the final two seconds in the nonleague contest.

Ashland (0-1) had a blocked 3-pointer and called its final timeout prior to the fateful inbounds play that was defended well by Class 4A North Valley (2-1) and left the Grizzlies forced to settle for an inside basket by Logan Sanford.

The 5A Grizzlies also suffered a big loss at the start of the second quarter when senior Gabe Ekwall scored and came down awkwardly on his ankle after the challenged shot. He was lost for the rest of the game and his future status was unknown as of press time.
