Independence Day celebration

Sister City 50th anniversary celebrations that began when nearly 60 amigos from Guanajuato, Mexico, visited Ashland in April and 85 Ashlanders traveled to Guanajuato in May, resumed on Independence Day in Ashland.

The Ashland Chamber of Commerce dedicated its annual old-fashioned Fourth of July to “celebrating 50 years of friendship” between the two cities.

The Chamber chose Graciela Magdalena Garcia de Tapp-Kocks, better known in both cities simply as Señora Chela, to share parade grand marshal honors with Mexican Congressman Juan Carlos Romero Hicks of Guanajuato. Romero Hicks missed the parade because of schedule conflicts.

Guanajuato’s summer festival queen, Andrea Marina Maldonado, and her sister, Claudia, represented Guanajuato in the parade and other gatherings.
