Flower it Forward begins at Del Rio Vineyard

Trisha Cromwell says she has visited Del Rio Vineyard about 25 times over the past few years to make bouquets for strangers and to spread a little love.

Del Rio began its annual Flower it Forward promotion Wednesday, offering free U-pick zinnias as long you pick a bouquet for someone else.

“I’m out here just trying to spread some love. It’s such an easy thing to do, and Del Rio makes it affordable cause it’s free to bring people amazing, beautiful flowers,” said Cromwell.

Before coming to the flower fields, she buys 10 vases. With the help of her children, the family makes quick work of building bouquets for family, friends and strangers.

“I do it as often as I can because so many people appreciate it,” she said.

In 2016 Del Rio co-owner Jolee Wallace decided to plant zinnia fields at the vineyard and make it a U-pick locale, but with one catch.

Visitors are asked to pick two bouquets — one for themselves and one for someone else.

By encouraging people to come out and pick flowers for free, Wallace hoped to brighten someone’s day and spread kindness within the community.

“This has been such a joy-filled experience,” said Del Rio marketing manager Lindsey Zagar.

Over the past six years, Zagar said, the winery has been encouraged by the stories people share about the bouquets they have gifted.

The vineyard has cutting shears available for visitors to use and vases to take home if flower pickers forgot one at home. The picking will stay open until the first frost of the season.
