PREP ROUNDUP: GP wins, South, CC enjoy PRs

Track and field

Grants Pass pulled out boys and girls track and field victories in a three-way meet with South Medford and Cascade Christian at South Medford High Wednesday.

But the Panthers and Challengers had strong performances to hang their hats on.

Grants Pass’ boys won with 95 points, followed by South Medford (56) and Cascade Christian (28).

The Panther boys got a pair of personal bests and wins from sophomore sprinter Andrew Walker, who went 11.08 in the 100 meters and 22.41 in the 200. South Medford’s Kalem Gartin and Connor Singer registered PRs in claiming the 400 and 800, respectively.

Cascade Christian’s Will Pierson won two events, taking the javelin at 155 feet, 6 inches, and the high jump at 6-0.

In the girls meet, the Cavers scored 77 points, South Medford 65 and Cascade Christian 24.

The Panthers’ Brooke Fairbanks, a freshman, set a PR in the 100 in 12.83 seconds.

Cascade Christian’s Autumn Murray improved her best in the long jump, winning at 16-8. The Challengers’ Madalynn Strain won the discus with a PR of 105-0.

NORTH SPLITS: North Medford used a pair of individual wins from Audrey Yechout to edge Roseburg 67-58 in the girls meet but the Black Tornado boys fell short 81-60 despite several PR victories.

Yechout won the girls triple jump with a PR of 32 feet, 2 inches, and also won the high jump at 4-8.

Other PR victories by the Tornado girls were turned in by Kira Pyka in the 100 (13.54), Estella Gutches in the 800 (2:31.25), Reese Meager in the 1,500 (5:27.19) and Eleanor Nichol in the 3,000 (12:06.30).

Personal records during wins on the boys side for North came from Nathan Rider won the 200 (22.05), Aidan Vanderhoof in the 400 (50.37), Shane Stout in the 3,000 (10:30.20) and Terrell Kim in the shot put (43-3).

CRATER SWEEPS ASHLAND: At Central Point, Walker Dorris and Gabriel Williams each posted a pair of individual victories in the boys meet for Crater and the Comet girls got a pair of wins from Bailee Dawson, Allison Waters and Cambrea Goodwin to dominate at Dutch Meyer Field.

Dorris swept the hurdle events, winning in 16.83 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 44.06 in the 300 hurdles, and Williams won the shot put (41-8.50) and discus (116-7) to help Crater topple Ashland in the team standings, 86-55.

Dawson swept the hurdle events as well, posting personal records in the 100 (19.82) and 300 (50.77) events, while Waters took first in the shot put (30-0) and discus (91-8.50) and Goodwin won the 200 (28.57) and triple jump (31-10).

Vincent Senn (400), Cameron Stein (1,500) and Reed Pryor (3,000) were the lone individual winners on the boys side for Ashland, while the girls team got wins from Mary Sophia Cellini (400), Grace Yaconelli (1,500) and Violet Hering (3,000).

Softball

ROSEBURG 10, SOUTH MEDFORD 0, 5 inn.: At Roseburg, Roseburg scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to invoke the 10-run mercy rule and end the Southern Oregon Conference game.

Roseburg is 10-3 and South Medford 2-9.

Indians pitcher Kami Gibson pitched a one-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one. June Woster singled for the Panthers’ lone hit.

Shyla Mead homered, drove in three runs and scored three for Roseburg. Olivia Dedmon was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Neveah Williams and Stephanie Blix each had two hits and two RBIs.

PHOENIX 15, HIDDEN VALLEY 5, 5 inn.: At Talent, Jayden Vos rapped three triples to lead Phoenix.

Vos was 3-for-3, walked twice, drove in four runs and scored twice as the Pirates improved to 7-6.

Kassandra Skaff was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Phoenix, and teammate Josie Bolstad recorded two RBIs and two runs.

Raelyssa Goff got the pitching win, allowing six hits, striking out six and walking four.

Jia Bents stroked a two-run home run in the first inning for Hidden Valley (3-10).

Baseball

HIDDEN VALLEY 11, PHOENIX 0: At Talent, Nate Vidlak pitched a no-hitter for Hidden Valley, striking out 14 and walking two.

The junior added a home run for the Mustangs, who remained perfect at 13-0. Phoenix dropped to 7-6.

Isaac Hill slugged his eighth homer of the season and added a double for Hidden Valley, and Daniel and Mathew Iwamizu each poked two doubles.

Girls Tennis

SKYLINE CONFERENCE: Phoenix’s top doubles team of Courtney House and Gowri Vellanki lost a tiebreaker to fall into the consolation bracket but responded with three pro-set victories to claim the league tournament’s consolation championship in doubles at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

House and Vellanki fell to Henley’s No. 1 doubles tandem of seniors Ashleigh Johnston and Elli Smith in a third-set tiebreaker to move from the championship bracket. In the consolation final, the Phoenix duo won 8-5 over Morgan Picatti and Bailey Flood of Marshfield.

The lone Phoenix player to advance out of the first round in the championship bracket was Allyson Ellis in singles, who won 6-3, 6-1 over Jenna Stevens of Junction City. Ellis was eliminated in the second round.

The championship semifinals and finals will be played Saturday in Eugene to complete the tournament.
