’Something that seemed normal’

Heap of unwanted stuff ready for yard sale isolated on white
Plant club events, yard sales return to the local schedule

After more than a year of COVID restrictions on gatherings and last year’s fire season threw Southern Oregon for a long and unpleasant loop, local plant clubs and yard-sale buffs are rallying to bring back some fun with a steadily growing list of sales this spring and summer.

The city of Central Point plans to host its spring and fall citywide yard sales in partnership with the Central Point Chamber of Commerce this year, and it looks like a record-breaking year is on tap.

Nikki Petersen, special events coordinator for the city of Central Point, said yard-sale registrations were double the norm.

“We have never had more than 95 yard sales register, and as of now we have 198 registered, which is crazy!” Petersen said.

“I think everyone’s been sitting around for a year with nothing to do, so a lot of spring cleaning is being done and people want to get back out there. We’re encouraging local businesses to host sidewalk sales, and food trucks and restaurants to get in on the fun, too.”

Barnstormer’s Vintage Fair broke the ice in late April with the first of its pair of 2021 shows at The Expo.

Shelly Britt, who purchased the event in 2019, admitted a fair amount of anxiety bringing back one of the region’s first large gatherings with pandemic restrictions still largely in place. Britt said the event was set up for staggered admission times and reduced capacity to comply with guidelines.

“Everyone was so excited to get out and do something that seemed normal, even though everything was still 10 feet apart with masks on ... they barely complained,” Britt said.

“We spread out into two buildings so we could social distance, and everyone had a really positive response to having more space in general and not having it be so crowded,” Britt said.
