Cave Junction murder suspect arrested in California

A drifter found in Northern California with a stolen vehicle and a gunshot wound has been arrested as a suspect in a Cave Junction homicide.

Deymon Lamon Edwards, 22, faces murder, robbery and burglary charges in the Thursday shooting death of 43-year-old Devin Tandy at his home in the 900 block of Caves Highway, according to a murder warrant filed Friday in Josephine County Circuit Court.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday, Josephine County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police detectives found Tandy’s body lying in the laundry room area of his home with evidence of an apparent gun fight.

OSP detectives say they found “multiple shell casings from a rifle as well as a handgun,” according to the seven-page warrant filed in Edwards’ case, and that there were “bullet strike marks throughout the laundry room and back porch area.”

Tandy’s 2010 Toyota Highlander SUV was missing from the scene of the crime.

Within two hours of the shooting, the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office stopped Edwards driving Tandy’s SUV in Crescent City, California, according to Del Norte County Jail records and the warrant. Inside the vehicle, police found multiple guitars, large tubs, an “AR type rifle” and a handgun halfway under the passenger seat.

Edwards had a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was treated at a hospital before police lodged him in jail.

OSP detectives questioned Edwards at the jail Thursday, and he allegedly told police he stole the vehicle in Northern California while the driver was using the bathroom. He told police that a friend accidentally shot him with a rifle the night before, also while he was using the bathroom, Edwards told police.

Edwards allegedly said he didn’t know Tandy, but at least one witness allegedly told police Edwards had trimmed marijuana plants for Tandy during harvest last fall, and had stayed on Tandy’s property overnight at least once.

The Josephine County District Attorney’s Office Friday charged Edwards with first-degree murder with a firearm, first-degree robbery with a firearm, first-degree burglary with a firearm, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and first-degree theft.

As of Friday afternoon, Edwards remained in held in the Del Norte County Jail without bail. No hearings have been scheduled in Josephine County Circuit Court.
